Electrical Safety Inspection · West Virginia
An electrical safety inspection is a hands-on check of the panel, wiring, grounding, devices and protection by a licensed electrician. It is worth doing when you buy an older home, an insurer asks, after a flood or fire, or before a big electrical project.
Hilly terrain, flooding and older homes make storm repair and rewiring common.
Across the Mid-Atlantic, homes deal with humid summers, coastal storms and occasional ice. Permit offices, utilities and housing stock differ by city, which affects how electrical safety inspection is planned and scheduled. These local guides cover the West Virginia cities where we have written specific notes.
Huntington's older homes around Ritter Park and on the Southside often have knob-and-tube, cloth wiring, small services and work done without permits, and many near Marshall University have been rentals for decades. An inspection before buying can reveal these issues and help plan repairs.
Utility: Appalachian Power
After the June 2016 floods in Kanawha County, many homes needed electrical inspections before power could safely be restored, and flooding remains a risk in low-lying areas along the Kanawha and Elk rivers. Any outlet, panel or wiring that has been under water should be inspected and usually replaced.
Utility: Appalachian Power

Electricians set their own prices; local permit fees and utility requirements add to these factors.
Permits come from the city or county where the home is. For example: Huntington: Electrical permits in Huntington come from the city's Department of Planning and Development; outside city limits, Cabell or Wayne County handles permits. Charleston: Electrical permits in Charleston come from the city's building department; outside city limits, Kanawha County handles permits.
