About hot tub electrical installation

Most full-size hot tubs need a 240 volt circuit of 40 to 60 amps; plug-and-play tubs use a 120 volt GFCI outlet. The manufacturer's installation manual sets the exact circuit size.

Water and electricity together make the code requirements strict: a GFCI-protected disconnect placed at least 5 feet from the tub and within sight of it, bonding of metal parts, and clearances from overhead lines.

Signs you need this

  • Buying a 240-volt hot tub or swim spa
  • Moving an existing tub to a new location
  • A tub that trips its GFCI
  • No disconnect near an existing tub
  • Adding a tub that may exceed panel capacity

What the electrician does

  1. 1

    Read the spec sheet

The manufacturer's requirements set breaker size, wire size and GFCI type.

  2. 2

    Plan the route

The circuit is routed in conduit or buried cable to a disconnect near the tub.

  3. 3

    Install disconnect and bonding

A GFCI disconnect and bonding conductors are installed.

  4. 4

    Inspect

The installation is inspected before the tub is filled and powered.

What affects the cost

Electricians set their own prices. These are the factors that move a quote up or down, so you can compare like for like.

  • Circuit size (40, 50 or 60 amps)
  • Distance and trenching from the panel
  • Panel capacity
  • Disconnect and GFCI equipment
  • Permit fees

What you can do safely, and when to stop

Safe to do

  • ✓ Have the tub's electrical spec sheet ready

Stop and call

  • ✕ Do not use an extension cord for a hot tub
  • ✕ Do not bypass a tripping GFCI

Hot Tub Electrical Installation FAQ

What size breaker does a hot tub need?

Commonly 40 to 60 amps at 240 volts for full-size tubs; check the manufacturer's manual.

How far must the disconnect be from the tub?

At least 5 feet away and within sight of the tub under the NEC, unless a local code differs.

Why does my hot tub trip the GFCI?

Moisture in a component, a failing heater or a wiring issue; it should be diagnosed, not bypassed.

Can a hot tub go on an existing circuit?

No. Hot tubs need their own dedicated circuit.

Do I need a permit?

Yes in most places for the new circuit and disconnect.
