Dedicated circuits

A dedicated circuit serves one appliance or one heavy-use area so it does not share capacity with anything else. Ranges, dryers, heat pumps, hot tubs, window AC units, microwaves and shop tools usually need one.

About dedicated circuits

Most tripping problems in kitchens, garages and home offices come from too much on one circuit. A space heater and a microwave on the same 15 amp circuit is a common example. A new dedicated circuit removes the conflict.

240 volt circuits for ranges, dryers, heat pumps, hot tubs and EV chargers need the right wire size, breaker and receptacle, and often a disconnect. The electrician also checks that the panel has the space and capacity.

Signs you need this

  • A circuit that trips when two appliances run
  • Adding a range, dryer, hot tub, heat pump or shop tool
  • Space heaters or window AC units on shared circuits
  • A home office with several computers and printers

What the electrician does

  1. 1

    Check panel capacity

Open spaces and available capacity are confirmed.

  2. 2

    Run the circuit

Correctly sized cable is run to the location with the right receptacle or disconnect.

  3. 3

    Test and label

The breaker is labeled and the circuit tested under load.

What affects the cost

Electricians set their own prices. These are the factors that move a quote up or down, so you can compare like for like.

  • 120V or 240V and amperage
  • Distance from the panel
  • Finished walls and access
  • Outdoor disconnects or weatherproof hardware
  • Panel space

What you can do safely, and when to stop

Safe to do

  • ✓ Move heavy appliances to different circuits while you wait

Stop and call

  • ✕ Do not use extension cords for space heaters or AC units

Key terms

Double-pole breaker
A breaker that occupies two spaces and supplies 240 volts.
Ampacity
The current a conductor can carry continuously without exceeding its temperature rating.
Tandem breaker
A breaker that fits two circuits into one panel space, allowed only in panels listed for it.

Dedicated Circuits FAQ

Does a hot tub need a dedicated circuit?

Yes. Hot tubs need a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit and usually a disconnect within sight of the tub.

What is a dedicated circuit?

A circuit that serves a single appliance or outlet, with its own breaker, so that appliance does not share capacity with anything else.

Which appliances need a dedicated circuit?

Typically electric ranges, ovens, dryers, water heaters, central air and heat pumps, EV chargers, and often refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, disposals, sump pumps, hot tubs and window or mini-split air conditioners. The manufacturer's instructions set the requirement.

What is the difference between a 120-volt and a 240-volt circuit?

Most outlets are 120 volts. Large heating and motor loads such as dryers, ranges, EV chargers and many air conditioners use 240-volt circuits with a double-pole breaker.

How is the wire size chosen?

By the circuit's breaker rating and the length of the run: for example, 12-gauge copper for a 20 amp circuit and 10-gauge for 30 amps, with larger wire for long runs to limit voltage drop.

Can my panel handle another circuit?

It needs an open space, or room for a tandem breaker where the panel allows it, and enough service capacity. An electrician checks both before adding a circuit.

How long does it take to add a dedicated circuit?

Often a few hours when the panel is close and access is easy. Long runs, finished ceilings or exterior trenching take longer.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for a space heater or window AC?

It is strongly recommended. A 1,500-watt space heater uses most of a 15 amp circuit on its own, which is why sharing causes tripping.
