Homes and wiring in Athens

Athens and Clarke County are a consolidated government and home to the University of Georgia. Cobbham, Boulevard, Five Points and Normaltown hold homes from the 1800s to the 1940s, and many houses near campus are student rentals. Ice storms and summer thunderstorms bring most outages.

Historic homes may have knob-and-tube or cloth wiring, and student rentals often have overloaded circuits and work added over many leases. Mid-century homes may have small panels. Raised foundations with crawl spaces are common, which makes routing new wiring easier but exposes old wiring to moisture.

Weather, seasons and the utility

Athens has hot, humid summers with frequent thunderstorms and mild winters, but ice storms can coat the city's many trees and bring down lines. Spring storms bring occasional tornado warnings. Georgia Power serves most of Athens-Clarke County and handles meters, service drops and reconnection; some outlying areas are served by electric membership corporations.

Common calls in Athens

Home Rewiring in AthensCobbham, Boulevard and Five Points hold many of Athens' homes from the 1800s to the 1930s, and knob-and-tube or cloth wiring still turns up in their attics and crawl spaces, often in houses that have been student rentals near the University of Georgia for decades.Electrical Safety Inspection in AthensStudent rentals near the University of Georgia often show years of heavy use: overloaded circuits, missing cover plates, outlets without GFCI protection and wiring added without permits.Electrical Panel Upgrade in AthensOlder Athens homes in Normaltown, Five Points and the neighborhoods near campus often have 60 or 100 amp services, and adding central air, a heat pump, an EV charger or more bedroom circuits for a rental usually requires an upgrade.Electrical Repair & TroubleshootingDead outlets, flickering lights and tripping breakers usually come from a loose connection, a failed device, an overloaded circuit or a tripped GFCI somewhere upstream.EV Charger InstallationA Level 2 home charger needs a 240 volt circuit, usually 40 to 60 amps, run from your panel to the garage or driveway.Generator InstallationA generator must connect through a transfer switch or an approved interlock so it can never feed power back into utility lines.Whole-Home Surge ProtectionA whole-home surge protective device (SPD) mounts at the panel and limits voltage spikes before they reach your circuits.
